Simplicity is the secret… The MAC cell from Modular Automation is a remarkable creature: simplicity itself in construction, yet with the ability to create assemblies of amazing complexity. The MAC is operated by just two cams: one makes the turret move up and down; the other moves the cell’s index station in and out. In essence that’s all the MAC cell does, just as every piece of music ever written is a question of arranging 12 notes in the right order. They are both very simple concepts but instead of playing a symphony the MAC has the ability to assemble almost any product: electronic equipment, automotive components, medical devices – one machine even puts together paper flowers with remarkable speed and accuracy. The secret is in the way in which the index stations are configured. By adding grippers, screwdrivers, inspection sensors and pick-and-place units, appropriate work-holding tooling, and feeding components through bowl, linear or strip feeders, the range of components that can be assembled on the MAC is almost endless. It comes pre-wired with Bus connections to eliminate costly wiring on site and reduce the opportunities for faults; it is PC controlled, not PLC, so it can be easily integrated into any manufacturing process; and the standard WindowsÔtouch-screen control panel swings out for easy access even in confined spaces. The benefit of using this deceptively simple technology, of course, is reduced cost, fast lead times and metronome-like reliability. The cost is kept low by standardisation of the core machine with customisation only of the tooling. As the machine does not have to be designed from scratch each time, it’s possible to supply the MAC virtually from stock for some applications. The cam technology keeps the number of moving parts down to a minimum for low maintenance costs and reliability. Simple control systems keep the cost of commissioning down to a minimum. For larger projects it is possible to link any number of MAC cells together using simple conveyors. It seems that today we are living in an increasingly complex world. Isn’t it nice to know that, even today, in our computer-controlled, internet-based, politically correct society, some things are just as simple as they always were.
