Modular Automation International Takes on Apprentices to Bridge Skills Gap

Birminghambased automation specialist Modular Automation International has turned to traditional means to bridge the emerging skills gap in the engineering sector.  Perhaps taking a lead from Sir Alan Sugar, the company has recently recruited 5 apprentices to train in a variety of engineering skills including design, mechanical engineering, and electrical installation.

Modular’s factory in Small Heath designs and manufactures precision assembly equipment most of which is custom built to meet specific applications.  The engineering skills involved are considerable, and the company is concerned that a lack of young people wishing to take up engineering as a career could result in a serious skill shortage in the future.

“More and more young people are looking towards careers in industries like IT when they leave school or college and tend to think of engineering as old fashioned, greasy and dirty,” said Modular’s production Manager Ellis Pearsall.  “We want to dispel that myth: modern engineering combines cutting edge computer technology with traditional skills and know-how.  At Modular we use those skills to help our customers streamline production and compete with the best in the world.  It’s an exciting business to be in, but we need new blood to secure our long-term future, which is why we started the apprenticeship scheme.”

Modular Automation is a leading supplier of automatic assembly equipment and has particular expertise in the medical device and pharmaceutical industries.
